8/4/14    Good Morning Nicaragua

The Nica Nuggets became more popular than I expected. As the number of subscribers grew, many of your email systems and servers began treating my newsletters as spam. I began getting complaints that many of you were no longer receiving Nica Nuggets and some of your systems even black-listed me which meant my newsletter was blocked.

In order to ensure you can receive my Nica Nuggets, I will be sending future issues via this method. Unfortunately some of you may not wish to receive the newsletter. When I copied over the mailing list, the people that had unsubscribed were added again in the copy process.

To unsubscribe from Nica Nuggets simply click on “Unsubscribe” at the top or bottom of this newsletter. I hope you will not unsubscribe and be assured you may unsubscribe at any time in the future. OK, back to the regular newsletter stuff.

Another busy week especially since we are returning to the states Monday. It has been several years since we returned so it is a trip long overdue. If any evildoers are reading this, our Granada home will be occupied and there are two man-eating (or woman) vicious dogs named George and Gracie. Don’t let their toothy grins fool you, they’ll dismember you in a heartbeat.

One of the things we will be doing back home is going through all of our old photo albums. Probably will throw out most photos and just keep a few special ones. Another thing the digital age has destroyed since pulling out a photo album is a good way to scare people away now and who has more than a few minutes to look at paper photos?

Hope this new format for the newsletter gets to you OK. I’m sure there will be a few bugs I will need to address. Remember, no Nica Nuggets while we are away until August 25th.

Regards
Darrell

How to Deal With Stress

By Dr. Jerry Lee Hoover N.D.

Stress refers to physical or mental demands that require an increased response from the body. Stress can be caused by changes in our daily life, including changes for the better, such as getting married,  graduating from college,  moving to Nicaragua, etc.

Our New Home – Week 9

Visibly, not a lot happened on our home this week. The first floor roof trusses were all put in place and I assume they will start on the second floor roof this week. The first layer of concrete facing was put on all external and internal walls. Looks like all major plumbing as been installed and the ditch was dug to connect the house to the community water line. The pool has been dug and concrete is being poured. Still on schedule to complete in 16 weeks.

Biggest Engineering Project in Human History

Interesting overview and video of the proposed Nicaragua Canal. Will this ever really happen? Don’t know but construction is supposed to start in December. I would think the Wall of China or the Pyramids were bigger engineering projects.

Linda and I have now hosted three Granada Christian Fellowship gatherings at our house. We meet on Sunday mornings at 10:30. This is open to anyone who wants to have fellowship by singing hymns, reading scripture and sharing prayer requests, we finish up by 12. The numbers have been increasing every week and we would love to have you join us.

Our house is located at 708 Calle Xalteva one block east of the Maria Auxiliadora Church. This is non-denominational and everyone is welcome.

Should Travelers Give to Kids Who Beg

Good article forwarded to me by Mary Helen on effects of giving money, food and other things to kids that beg. What is nice about this article is that it also gives some good solutions to the issues.

We discuss this a lot here due to the kids that beg on our main drag, La Calzada. Many of them are not begging due to lack of food, they just prefer the leftover food to the bland diets they have at home. Being a poor country, if a child can get a tourist or expat to give them a dollar and they do this easily once an hour then they are making more than many of their parents. What is the incentive to stay in school if begging is more profitable?

But we see this problem more in Granada and SJDS than other areas of Nicaragua.

Montezuma Oropendola

The Montezuma oropendola (Psarocolius montezuma) is a New World tropical bird. It is a resident breeder in the Caribbean coastal lowlands from southeastern Mexico to central Panama, but is absent from El Salvador and southern Guatemala. It also occurs on the Pacific slope of Nicaragua and Honduras and northwestern Costa Rica. The English and scientific names of this species commemorate the Aztec emperor Moctezuma II. They are master nest builders as you can see on the picture above.

This is from our friend Alf and the link below shows a baby being fed by Alf’s son. I always wondered what bird made these beautiful hanging nests that people put in their homes for good luck.

Biblioteca Puedo Leer is Eight Years Old!

It’s very hard to remember what life was like before the library came into being as it has been eight years now.

We have grown to having two lending libraries, two reading corners and an extended public school book programme.  We have hundreds of children and a growing number of adults using the libraries.  It is very satisfying to have children come in requesting specific books to help them with school assignments and parents bringing in very young children who are not yet readers.  All of this brings the hope for the future of Nicaraguans.  They will be more literate and know that books and reading can be for enjoyment, not just for obtaining information.

We will be celebrating our eighth anniversary on Saturday, August 23 in the side street near the library on Santa Lucia.  Children from the reading room at Hotel Con Corazan and the lending library at Pancasan will be present too.

We have a variety of activities planned and would like to give small prizes to those who participate.  If you or your business would like to sponsor an activity and provide for prizes we would be very appreciative.  Contact Carol Rea, [email protected] if you would like to be a sponsor.  We would, of course, give credit for such sponsorship.

Even if you are not able to sponsor an event please do come and join us at 2:00pm Saturday, August 23 on the side street next to the Casa Flor de Panamena.

Need Pet Papers?

I’m Dr. Lester Tapia, a Veterinarian (bilingual) from Granada. I am licensed and accredited to extend animal health certificates for all animals. I have also facility to have all the paperwork to get an animal out of the country in one day. And the owner will not have to travel to Managua to make long lines, extra fuel spend or simply deal with the language barriers since typically nobody speaks English there.

Kittens Need a Home

Here are some pics of the 6 kitties we rescued several months ago. They are now approximately 4.5 months old. There are five females and one male. All recently sterilized. Please let me know if you have room to take any of them or could help find homes for them. As I mentioned in my previous email, we are running out of time before we will be forced to put them outside as we have been given notice by our landlord, so any help you can give us in finding these kitties good homes as soon as possible would be greatly appreciated. We have raised these six kittens since they were newborns and hand fed them and gave them all the care and love they needed to grow to what they are today. They have grown into beautiful, energetic, affectionate, healthy young kittens and we are so happy to have had the opportunity to save these precious creatures. We would wish for nothing less for them and we are now desperately searching for good homes for them to go to.
Also, if a permanent home is not possible, then possibly there may be some people willing to foster any of them so we can have more time to find them ‘forever homes’.
We have a truck and can help deliver them if needed.
Cheers, Natalie  8855-5165 claro   [email protected]

How This Works

This newsletter is generated by www.nicaragua-community.com. This website has all of the past issues, articles and much more. The website www.nicaragua-guide.com is more of a reference guide on Nicaragua for expats living here, people considering moving here and longer term tourists. It even has information such as doctors, dentists, services available and information on most areas of Nicaragua. Both websites list most of the significant websites, blogs and forums about Nicaragua.

Submission of Articles

Shyness and being an expat do not go hand in hand. We need articles and all of you know something of interest. Write about the shock of coming to Nicaragua, what you like best about Granada, an interesting trip you took, your success in starting a business, financial tips, building tips, Nica music you like, etc. Come on! I’m not a great writer but I’m an interesting writer and so are you. Submit a rough article and we will clean it up for you.

Just send the article directly to me at [email protected] of at least 500 words. You may also send a photo in JPG format and smaller than 150,000 bytes. I will resize it if necessary. Due to the number of weird expats living here and some pessimists which should return to the country of their origin, we reserve the right to refuse articles or to edit them. Sorry, but some of you are just not happy about anything. We do accept constructive, intelligent opinion pieces.
