The cemetery of Granada was founded in the year of 1830, has an extension of 27 blocks; there are sculptures brought from Italy in the 1830th century, of great beauty and sculptural value, most of them in marble of Carrara, becoming for many as the best cemetery in Central America.

When entering the cemetery we have in front the imposing Chapel of Animas, which was charted in 1871 by Teodoro Emilio Hocke and built by master Carlos Ferrey in 1882 with neoclassical inspiration similar to a Greek temple and according to historians it is a replica of the Magdalene Church in Paris, France. Basaltic stone brought from the Postintepe Hill was used for its construction and was opened in 1922.

It has an osario that serves to deposit bone remains during exhumations and was built in 1897. Behind the mood chapel is a beautiful pool for people who do the construction work of vaults and watering to the birds that inhabit the holy field.

One of the Gothic architectural jewelry, found in the cemetery of ′′ La Gran Sultana “, is the Chapel of La Moralona. There is buried Mrs. Incarnation Hurtado widow of Morales of which so many stories and legends have been woven that in that chapel scare. Her husband was Santiago Morales, a tall man, while Doña Encarnación was of low stature and the nickname comes from the husband who was called the Moralón and to her therefore La Moralona.

On the left side of the chapel is the first Israelite cemetery in the country and is from the family of Don Teodoro Tefel and consists of 13 graves. The cemetery of Granada is abode of 8 former presidents of Nicaragua:- Fruit Chamorro Perez, first president of Nicaragua (1853-1855)- Fernando Guzman (1867-1871)- Vicente Cuadra Lugo (1871-1875)- Pedro Joaquin Chamorro Alfaro (1875-1879),- Joaquin Zavala Solis (1879-1883)- Diego Manuel Chamorro (1921-1923)- Benjamin Lacayo Sacasa (1947)- Lorenzo Warrior (1966-1967)In addition, so many Grenadine characters, historians, writers, poets, speakers, typical city characters, politicians, revolutionary guerrillas and so many others have been buried.
