Education Plus Update May 2020 Update

Dear Friends and Family, We are grateful to announce that you have come together to raise almost $16,000 towards matching the grants of $25,000 in order to feed our children.  We thank you greatly for the sacrifices you have made, and assure that every dollar you have donated will make a difference in the lives of a hungry child.

We’ve compiled a little video showing you how our food distribution works, the children receiving their food packets, and thanking you.  We thank you so much for bringing such joy to their lives, and for bringing joy to our lives as well.  Without you, none of the work we do would be possible.

It is heartbreaking to acknowledge, but Nicaragua is currently facing the worst food insecurity we have seen in all of our years working here.  It is worse than the 2018 political crisis.  We have seen mass graves just from walking down the streets, and many people are terrified to leave their homes.  Completely cut off from the rest of the world, prices for a majority of food staples have skyrocketed in Nicaragua, some doubling. 

Despite of this fact, and the fact that we have not yet reached our fundraising goal, we have decided to go ahead with a minimum food distribution of rice to families on June 3.  Simply said, people are going for days and weeks without solid food and we felt that we could not wait.  We must act now, and have faith that we will eventually be able to meet our goal.

Things are not normal in the world right now no matter where we live.  Nicaragua is not the only country where people are at risk of dying of hunger because of the Coronavirus crisis.  The only difference for us is that at least we have the opportunity to be able to put food directly into the hands of those suffering.  We may not be able to come even close to helping everyone who needs food right now.  But at least we can do our small part.

Any donations made in excess of this amount, should this miracle occur, will be used to do additional community food distributions and to increase the amount we spend on the children’s normal weekly food packets to make up for the current price increases.

Please be assured that when we distribute food to families, we thank the recipients for accepting these donations and being part of the Education Plus community.  We believe that no one should feel ashamed for having to accept food aid because of circumstances that are beyond his control, that no mother should feel ashamed for doing what she needs to to feed her children.  These families that have demonstrated commitment to their children’s education throughout the years; this is the least we feel we can do.

We wish all of our friends and supporters strength and health during these difficult times.  Again, we recognize that many of you have made great sacrifices in order to help us feed our children.  Words cannot express how grateful we are for your trust in us, and for the love you have shown for our children.
