The idea of ​​building the enormous image of Jesus of Mercy was born 14 years before it got inaugurated, when Nicaraguan businessman Erwin González dreamed of developing a great project to pay tribute to the saint of his faith, Jesus of Mercy, to whom he thanks to help him to Survive cancer.

“I dreamed of the image of Jesus of Mercy, and through that dream I had the mission of spreading the Mercy of the Lord,” Gonzalez’s statements were to a local newspaper in 2009.
That is why the figure of Jesus points directly to the church of San Juan del Sur, the expression shown by the Christ is to bless the world and express to humanity that through his mercy he is present to all.

195 pieces make up the statue. It was performed by the Costa Rican sculptor and architect, Max Ulloa Rayo, the realization of the 195-piece statue took two years. It is made based on metal structure and fiberglass (because it is a versatile material and easy to transport), they have a special treatment with patina (a kind of aqueous paste), beeswax base (which contributes to the conservation of the sculpture).

It measures 15 meters high and rests on a 9-meter pedestal, which allows the work to reach a total of 24 meters (the 11th largest image of Jesus in the world). It weighs four and a half tons.

It is located at a height of 134 meters above sea level and can be appreciated from land, sea or air.

According to the artist, the sculpture works with a natural sunscreen that repels fungus and moisture.

Two vans were needed to move the pieces and the assembly took six months of work, which was threatened by strong winds.
