The Prostrate Gland

By Dr. Jerry Lee Hoover N.D.

Many men do not know what the prostate gland does or where it is located or if they have any symptoms involving the prostate gland.  In this article I hope to help educate my readers about many of the aspects of the prostate gland.

The prostate gland is a part of the male reproduction system and it is about the size of a walnut and is located below the bladder.  The urethra tube, where one urinates through, passes through a section of the prostate gland then through the penis where the urine is discharged. When the urethra tube passes through the prostate gland it picks up the semen and sperm from the testicles when one ejaculates.

As one ages the prostate in most men starts to become larger.  When this happens it starts to squeeze the urethra tube making it harder for one to urinate, the more it enlarges the harder it is to urinate and eventually can stop all urine flow which is an emergency situation and can cause bladder and kidney damage.  Generally these symptoms are not noticeable until around the age of 50. Statics tell us that at age 60 over 50% of the men will have some problems with the prostate and at age 85 ninety percent will have symptoms.  Eight out of ten men will develop an enlarged prostate.  One good note is that the majority of prostate enlargements are not cancerous.

Listed below are some of the symptoms of an enlarged prostate gland.  Getting up frequently at night to urinate and also frequency urinating during the day, difficult to start urination, a weak or slow urinary stream, continued dribbling of urine, a feeling of not completely emptying your bladder. These are the most common symptoms.

Prostate-specific antigen test,  PSA Tests

This blood tests checks the amount of a protein  called PSA that is produced by prostate cells.  It is not a reliable test.  Of course there are always two opinions for this test. Opponents of the PSA test point to the fact that false positive readings can run as high as 75%.  Furthermore they say it’s costly and emotionally trying for the patient.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force doesn’t recommend routine PSA screening for men in the general population regardless of age.  They say the tests often may find cancers that are so slow growing that the person will die of something else first. The conventional medical treatments for prostate cancer can have serious side effects.

 TREATMENTS FOR THE PROSTATE GLAND

             Conventional Treatments

There are many conventional treatments for an enlarge prostate and they all have side effects. Here is just one of the many medications one can take for prostate problems.  Proscar’s side effects are chills, confusion, dizziness, bloating face, arms, etc. itchy skin, weight gain or loss, breast problem, such as swelling, inverted nipple, lumps in the breast, clear or bloody discharge from the nipple, etc.

Surgery can also be done on the prostate gland, but again I do not recommend surgery.  One of the most common surgery’s done is called TURP (transurethral resection of the prostate), this is where they cut away tissue from the prostate gland where the tissue is pressing against the urethra tube, this relieves the pressure so the person can urinate normally.  The major problem with this is that in a short time the prostate continues to enlarge and again and will press against the urethra tube, causing the same problem again.  The only one who benefits from this surgery is the Doctor, the patient will suffer from the surgery, possibility of a major infection and many side effects, with some of them listed here.  Retrograde ejaculation is where the sperm ends up in the bladder, lack of control of urine flow, impotence, problems with restricted urine flow, which is the reason for the surgery in the first place. There are many different surgery’s for the prostate, this was just one of them.

                  Natural Treatments

Now it is time to look at some natural ways to treat the prostate gland.  Eat pumpkin and sunflower seeds as they are high in zinc and they have compounds called phytosterols which can shrink the prostate. A diet rich in natural whole foods such as fresh vegetables, fruits, whole grains which are high in many phyto chemicals that are good for the prostate gland.  Soy foods are great as they contain estrogen that helps balance the testosterone metabolism of the prostate.  It is important to eliminate alcohol and reduce the amount of caffeine, meat and sugar as these have an adverse effect on the way testosterone is metabolized and removed by the liver then removed from the body through the urine.  Drinking plenty of water is also very important.

A herb that I have used for years for the prostate gland is Saw Palmetto Berries,(Serenoa repens or Sabal serrulata).  Some scientific studies have shown that it works better than many of the medications.

Conclusion

As one can plainly see the natural approach to treating the prostate gland is far superior to the conventional medical approach, especially when you look at all the side effects caused by the medications and surgery’s.   If you follow the natural treatment for the prostate, their are no side effects, in fact many other health problems you might have will probably improve some also.  If your having prostate problems I highly recommend following these simple things listed above for 2 to 3 weeks and you should start seeing results. To keep those results you are going to have to continue them from now on.  If you go back to living the way you did before the prostate problems will return.
