Journey to Granada

Journey us as we prepare to retire to Granada Nicaragua.

Nov 5/14
The beginning of an 18 month (target June 2016) journey to Granada Nicaragua.

A little history-

My wife Bev and I (Brad) have been researching places to retire in Central and South America for the last 5 years. We are currently in our mid fifties and wish to retire early and give of ourselves in our new country without being a financial burden on anyone including the government of our final destination. Our research has taken is to a very captivating part of the world called Granada Nicaragua.

Okay so what is the plan…..
Financially, we have planned to be able to purchase a colonial house but as advised we will rent first. We also have factored in a decent monthly income with a 20% raise when we get to the age of 65, after all we are fairly certain inflation will hit Nicaragua in our life time. My wife and I also wish to invest our time by volunteering where we can make a positive impact on our new country. We can’t help ourselves, we are planners!!

Next Step –

My Grand Pappy used to say to me, if you wait to have Kids until you can afford them, then you will never have them!
Well we are taking the same theory with respect to our retirement, but will still do our best to be wise about it.

We have booked a trip to Granada Nicaragua for Feb 28 to March 14/15.

We are staying at the Hotel Casa San Francisco as this is according to the Internet an expat hangout, perhaps we will meet a few. While in Nicaragua, we have scheduled appointments with a lawyer and a realtor. We want to see what our purchasing options (buy, renovate or build new) are currently as well as prepare for residency and need to know the best residency option for us, so we can decide if we have planned well so far. We also contacted a freight forwarder to receive a quote for a 20ft container to ship from Alberta Canada to Granada Nicaragua ($3670.00 all in) current cost. We may purchase a container to donate to a worthwhile cause once we are done with it in Nicaragua. We do not plan to bring a vehicle of any type as we want to live in town and will pay for trips that we require to Managua. We are certain we will come out ahead financially going this route.

In our 20ft container we would have over 100 boxes, a few bedroom suites and extra lamps ( Thanks Darrell)!! Of course this 20ft container may end being a 40ft container but the cost of the larger container would only be about 10% higher.

We have subscribed to Nica Nuggets and discovered a wealth of information there. If you have any questions at all about processes, Real Estate purchases/rentals or just what is life like in Nicaragua, just read throughly through Nica Nuggets and check out all links presented and you will find all of your answers. I have been reading and searching for a question that hasn’t been asked or answered yet, but with no success yet.

Until next time……

Sincerely
Brad and Bev
