Spanish Lesson 11
LESSON 11 by George Wu
Online Spanish for Expats
CONJUNCTION-2
Like I said, they are not as numerous as ours. In fact, they omit our reciprocal conjunctions and go easy on subordinating conjucntions.
if=si
Si la mesa no es tan alta como las montañas, es más alta que la costa.
If the plateau is not as high as the mountains, it is much higher than the coast.
Thank goodness that we can use present indicative verbs for the purpose, and not their subjunctives.
When it comes to reciprocals just use ni…ni, and o…o, although sometimes you can get by with one single o.
Te lo daré a Manual o Pepe.
I’ll give it to Manny or Joe.
When it comes to dependent sentences, they make use of subordinating conjunctions too but using their own expressions.
a condición de que = on the condition that
a fin de que = so that
mientras que = provided that
con tal que = ditto
por miedo de que = for fear that
puesto que = since
siempre que = provided that
tan pronto como = as soon as
ya que = since
en caso de que = in case that
en vista de que = in view of the fact that
debido en = because of (not just because)
Chances are you would only learn the simple sentences this time around; however, educated Nicas do make use of these now and then. Thus, if I were you, I’d keep my ears perked up for them. Remember “that” is “que” in their expressions, comjunctionwise..
