Natural Ways to Lose Weight

By Dr. Jerry Lee Hoover N.D.

Over 66% of the American population are overweight or obese, (that is two out of every three persons), causing them to have many health problems. When one is young they usually do not have problems with being overweight.  But during their teenage years if they overeat and do not exercise they start to gain more weight than normal.  After the teenage years many become less active and start to put on many extra pounds leading to obesity.  Older persons need to reduce their food intake as their metabolism usually slows down causing them to be less active.  When a person is obese it means that they have more excess body fat than one who is overweight.  Obesity of Hispanics was the highest (47%), Blacks were (46.8%), Whites (37.9) and Asians which was the lowest (12.7%).  Obesity of persons age 20 to 39 was (35.7%), those 40 to 59 was (42.8%), those over 60 it was (41%).

The best way to avoid being overweight is not to become overweight in the first place. The latest research shows that, once you’ve become overweight and lose weight, you have to eat less and exercise more to simply maintain your body at a new, lower weight than would someone at the same height and weight who has never been heavy, essentially dieting for the rest of your life just to break even.

Here Are Some Simple Ways To Lose Weight

Start your morning off by drinking a glass of water with a fresh lemon squeezed in it as soon as you get up. Lemons contain nomilin, a phytonutrient, which has been shown to activate bile acid receptors, It has even been shown to promote reduced body weight, blood sugar, and insulin levels and it is high in many nutrients which your body needs.

Drink plenty of water throughout the day, as water is a natural appetite suppressant, which helps one to not eat so much.  Many times a person thinks they are hungry when they are actually thirsty.  Water also increases calorie burning and water is necessary for the body to burn fat, and without water the body cannot properly metabolize stored fat.  It is almost impossible for one to drink too much water, so increase your water consumption if you want to lose weight.

Eat more whole foods such as potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, apples, oranges, bananas, etc. These foods, since they are whole they will not contain refined sugars, processed chemicals such as artificial flavorings, colors, preservatives, etc.   They are also very filling and are low in calories.  Cut back on your sugars, oils and fats, a tablespoon of oil has twice as many calories as a tablespoon of sugar, limit their use as much as possible if you want to lose weight.

Eat more slowly and enjoy the taste of the food while it is in your mouth.  Studies have shown that it will increase the production of hormones that are linked to weight loss

Do some form of daily exercise to help take off the unwanted pounds.  Exercise will also help firm up and give tone to your body’s muscles.  It is important to find an exercise program that you like to do so that you will continue it in the future.

Get more sleep, studies show that people who are sleep deprived are 55%  more likely to become obese, the percentage is even higher for children.

Things Not To Do To Lose Weight

Do not go on a high protein diet, yes you will lose weight because it takes more calories to digest the protein than the calories the protein supplied to the body.  A high protein diet can cause kidney problems which many develop who go on a high protein diet.

Do not go on a crash diet, losing weight to fast causes excessive skin wrinkling, many times once the diet is over and the person has lost the weight, it comes back and they weight more than they did before they started their diet. To keep the weight off you have to permanently change your eating habits, drinking water habits, exercising habits, etc. if you want to keep the weight off.

Do not take any type of medication to lose weight as the side effects are many times worse than having the extra weight.

Limit these foods that put the extra pounds on, cheese as it is 85% fat,  ground chuck is 80-85% fat, lean is 15-20% fat.  All oils are 100% fat, so frying anything in oil raises the fat content, one potato chip for example has 10 calories, where a whole baked potato has 100 calories.
