Staying Healthy

By Dr. Jerry Lee Hoover N.D.

One’s lifestyle, or the way one lives, determines if they will live a healthy life opposed to one who disregards the simple laws of health and pays for this disregard with a number of illnesses and a shorter life span.   In this article I will be sharing simple common sense inexpensive ways that one should follow to stay healthy and live longer.   One of the most important ones is diet, so we will start with this one first.  We are what we eat, the food one consumes is the raw materials that maintain one’s body.  If the quality of the food one eats is junk food made with refined ingredients, full of artificial preservatives, colors, dyes, antibiotics, hormones, etc. than we can expect to not be healthy.  But if the foods we consume are natural wholesome foods we can expect to be healthy.

So let’s take a look at the kinds of foods we need to be eating to stay healthy.  Whole foods that are not prepackaged, or come in a can or bottle, one example, package of store bought cookies that are preserved to stay on the store shelf for months without spoiling, verses ones you bake or from a local bakery that will spoil in a few days.  Potatoes, carrots, cabbage, etc., are not packaged and are good for you whereas potato chips which come in a package cause obesity, one potato chip has 10 calories were as a whole large potato has 100 calories, which will fill you up first one large cooked potato or 10 potato chips?  Whole grains not refined grains,  for example, a loaf of whole wheat bread has 5 times more fiber, over twice the amount of protein and whole wheat bread has wheat germ which contains many nutrients such as Vitamin E and omega 3 fatty acids that protect against heart disease, white bread has no wheat germ.  All types of fresh fruits – apples, mangoes, oranges, etc.  Fresh squeezed orange juice verses a bottle of orange juice bought in the store, remember it came in a bottle so it has been heated destroying all the natural enzymes that are found in an orange and after you read the ingredients on this bottle of orange juice, which most do not read, you decide not to buy it as the first ingredient is water, second is refined sugar, third is finally orange juice from concentrate, then some added artificial ingredients such as coloring to make it look really orange and of course preservatives, unless it is frozen.  I challenge you next time you’re in the store take a look at the ingredients on a bottle of orange juice.  So the point I am trying to get across to my readers, try eating more unrefined natural wholesome foods.  Fast foods are not natural wholesome foods.

One needs to eat more raw foods that are high in enzymes, cooked foods have no enzymes at all as heat destroys all they originally had and the heat also destroyes some of the vitamins and minerals.  Fresh fruits and salads should be a part of a healthy diet, as they are low in calories and high in vitamins, minerals and phytochemicals.  According to the 2005 Dietary Guidelines for Americans one should be consuming between five and thirteen fruits and vegetables each day.  A good rule of thumb is to make sure that at least 30% of the food on your plate is raw, the more the better that way you will be trying to get enough fruits and vegetables each day in your diet.

Refined sugar is the single worst ingredient in most individuals diet, according to different statistics the average American eats between 22 and 31 teaspoons of sugar daily.  There are no proteins, essential fats, vitamins or minerals in refined sugar they have all been taken out.  Scientific studies have shown that refined sugar can cause diabetes, tooth decay, obesity, vitamin and mineral depletion, cause heart disease, cause fatty liver, hyper activity, cancer, is highly addictive, etc.  I want to encourage my readers to cut way back on your use of refined sugar, you may think you are not eating that many teaspoons of sugar, but so many package foods have sugar as one of their main ingredients.  A 12 ounce bottle of soda has between 10 and 12 teaspoons of sugar, which I hope none of you are drinking if you want to stay healthy.

Many individuals think that expensive dietary supplements will supply all the nutrients their body needs, but this is false as these dietary supplements are synthetic and not real or in the perfect balance and combination that our Creator put them in real food. I have a chapter in my book NATURAL MEDICINE on supplements which you can down load free at the end of this article.

One needs to drink plenty of water everyday, most individuals keep the outside of their body’s clean by bathing everyday,  What about the inside of the body, does coffee or sugary sodas keep our body clean on the inside?  No, the inside of the body needs plenty of pure clean water to keep the blood stream clean.  If a person’s urine is dark with an odor then they are not drinking enough water.  How much water should one drink everyday, that depends upon many factors, do they sweat a lot doing exercise or working outside in the hot sun, is the weather warm or cold and how much they weigh are factors that determine how much water one needs to drink in a 24 hour period.  A person who is overweight needs more water than a thin person.  For example a person who weighs 200 pounds needs 100 ounces of water under normal circumstances, climate is not to hot or cold, doesn’t sweat a lot from exercise or work.  The formula is simple take a person’s weight, divide it into half and that is how many ounces they need.

Exercise is something we need to do at least 5 times a week, this means getting your heart rate up and work out a sweat. It is best to exercise outside in the fresh air and sunshine, and not in a closed up gym with no fresh air or sunshine, it is like exercising in a dirty shoe.  Walking is one of the simplest exercises, all you need is a good pair of shoes.  I do not recommend jogging as pounding the pavement is hard on the body’s joint unless you do a brisk walk or use a mini trampoline which is what I use.  What exercise you do, swimming, bicycling, playing tennis, etc. make sure that you enjoy it as this will encourage you to continue doing it on a regular basis.

Lose that extra weight as it has been scientifically proven that an overweight person ages faster, has more heart attacks diabetes, cancer, etc. and dies sooner.   Studies show that for every two pounds of extra weight one carries they will die one month sooner, so for example a person who is 24 pounds overweight will die one year earlier.

Try to help someone every day in some way.  Doing good to others increases the good hormones your body makes.  The Bible says “A merry Heart Doeth Good Like A Medicine.”  God put into each one of us a desire to help others and when we do just that we have these good feelings of satisfaction.

Everyone needs to give love and to receive love from a wife, girlfriend, children, family members, close friends, your special pet if you want to stay healthy.  Some of the loneliest people in the world are those who have no one to love in their life.

Don’t take life or death too seriously, as this can age or kill you.  Life always involves problems, remember this, the only ones who have no problems are those who are dead, so be glad you’re alive.  Try to live one day at a time, yesterday is gone and everything that happened yesterday cannot be taken back. Tomorrow may never come, so why worry about it, usually what we think is going to happen tomorrow is usually not as bad as we imagine it to be.  So enjoy today as it may be your last.

In Conclusion

We are only as old as we think we are, keep your mind active, be positive, be creative,be adventurous, etc.  A young mind keeps the body young and healthy.   If you faithfully try to make these simple suggestions part of your lifestyle, I promise you will feel better, look better, be happier and live longer.

Authors note:     I did not write anything about microwaves in this article, but when you use a microwave to cook your food, it destroys everything in the food and instead of that food nourishing you it hurts you.  I have a complete chapter in my book NATURAL MEDICINE on the microwave.  You can down load my free book from my website.  Just click on the link below in the write up about the author.
