Our New Home – Week 8

We have reached the halfway point if you count the first week of getting the permits and putting the stakes in the ground.

Essentially all walls, including the second floor, have now reached full height and the roof girders are being welded into place. Black water pipes are in place and the regular water pipes are being put in. Most of the electrical lines are in place. If this was a baby in gestation we would be at the point where the baby is kicking the mother.

Amy has picked out the wood stain color for the kitchen cabinets and doors. I will let the pictures tell the story.

As noted previously Amy wanted a large fountain outside the kitchen window to view the birds while scraping grease off the dirty plates. We went to Catarina and found a fountain which I thought was more appropriate for St. Peter’s Cathedral plaza but it was quite nice. Over six feet tall with three tiers and a large pool base. Birds will not come to drink and bathe, they will come to spend the summer.  If I had known we were getting a fountain this big I could have skipped building the swimming pool. 13 large concrete pieces of which few I could lift and all for $104. I really do like Nicaragua.

Week 8 (1)

Steel roof trusses on one side done on the first floor. Over one meter overhang to stop some of the rain from coming in the windows.

Week 8 (10)

All veranda arches are completed. Brick trim looks good.

Week 8 (11)

2nd floor walls at full height, window treatments being added. First floor concrete covering complete.

Week 8 (16)

View from the front as roof girders are welded into place. George is preparing to take a whiz on our new home.

Week 8 (18)

View of roof girders from the 2nd floor. That’s Mombacho on the right, Zapatera in the middle and faintly, further left is Concepcion in Ometepe.

Week 8 (17)

View from the front. Pool being dug in front.

Week 8 (4)

The forms and the supports have been removed from stairs. This will remain open. The door leads to the garage. Gracie runs upstairs every time we visit the site but George insists on waiting for the banister to be put in place before venturing up the stairs.

Week 8 (6)

The cane is ready to be put on the ceilings. The stain color Amy has selected for the cabinets and doors will also be used on the cane. Someone raised a lot of cane.

Week 8 (8)

West side of home. You can now see the side and front patio on the 2nd floor bedroom. In case of complete anarchy I will be able to defend my home from a safe and comfortable position. The attackers would have to be coming uphill which gives me battlefield advantage.

Week 8 (2)

Swimming pool being dug by hand. Hard to believe they can do it that precisely with just a shovel.

Week 8 (5)

Main electrical panel in place. There will be another one in the garage I believe. While we will have 220 v, we are not installing any air conditioning.
